Why are Return-to-Work Physical Capabilities Assessments Important?

The typical return-to-work decision made by physicians is often based on a subjective process without any objective testing or consideration of the physical requirements of the job. This can lead to workers being reinjured upon their return to work or staying out of work longer than necessary, even after completing medical treatment.

The better more objective way to approach this is to follow these six simple steps:

  1. Adjusters and case managers should proactively communicate with the treating provider to advise them about the timing of the upcoming return-to-work physician appointment.
  2. Additionally, the company would send the job description and job requirement scoring to DataFit.
  3. DataFit would supply the job requirements and compare the isokinetic strength results to the relevant metrics or previous new hire test results.
  4. During one of the final therapy visits, the injured worker will undergo isokinetic testing.
  5. The test results will be faxed by DataFit to the physician before the return-to-work appointment.
  6. The physician will then use the test results to make an objective, informed decision regarding the return to work.

These six steps aim to eliminate guesswork and bad decisions, providing a cost-effective solution to the problem.
